What do the dressmakers have to say about this?

Many people are too caught up in their sewing to have time to write, but we do get some nice letters, like these.

“In the 60 plus years since I first made doll clothes on my mother’s sewing machine, I have sewn everything from backpacks to bears, sleeping bags to slippers. Making little girls happy with a new dress is the most fun I could have. When I visit a school here in [town] with an arm load of ‘posies and eyelet’ the little girls crowd around to see and admire, and secretly hope they will be the lucky ones. I leave the clothing with the school nurse knowing that some little child will be made to feel special in her first ever new dress. She may decide that school is special too, and may try harder for that ‘A’ , or learn those hard English words. I hope so!

“Enclosed are snapshots of my first outfit for One Dress at a Time. Sewing children‘s clothing is a new experience for me. It was fun! I found myself so motivated after reading your enthusiastic letter.”

“There are 15 dresses that were made by [our group] and donated for needy girls. These are all tagged with sizes. The remaining 13 outfits and 1 pair of shorts were made and donated by [another group].”

“We had a successful sewing day last week and will have one this week too constructing dresses for young ladies. The response was great! The ladies joined together in the sewing room and we had some kits made up with patterns and fabric and some took those to sew at home. I would like to request about 20 tags for the dresses. I hope by the time everyone turns them in and we finish this Wednesday, it will be that number. My assistant lives at [another site] and she mentioned it to that sewing group too and hopefully they will join in (perhaps in the Fall). We have not picked an agency to give the dresses to, but it will be here in our community.”

“I have been thinking of doing something like you are doing. I am 81 years old, but I could sew at home.”

“[Our club] would like to thank you for attending our March meeting and presenting your program One Dress at a Time. Our club has decided to join you in making dresses for needy children in our community. We will be working on this project throughout the summer. Our goal is to have the dresses completed by August first. Our club is currently deciding on the charities that will be the recipients of the clothing.”

There are over 60 public elementary schools in the [local] district. Over 1/6th of them are ‘title 1’, meaning the families are poor. Some children share their school clothes with siblings, causing them to be absent. Many do not have laundry facilities available, and need clean clothing. Some families place more value on educating their boys than girls. These are just some of the reasons for sewing special clothing for the little girls. I hope other's will join in the joy of sewing just ‘One Dress’.”
